"We, CHARLES FERDINAND DUC DE BERRY, GRANDSON OF FRANCE, GRAND PRIOR OF THE GOLD, DRE OF S. JEAN DE JERUSALEM IN THE GRAND PRIORY OF FRANCE, CHIEF OF THE NOBLE CAVALRY REGIMENT OF OUR NAME, &c. &c. &c.

"LOUIS DE VERDALLE, from the Province of Aunis, Sub-Lieutenant in Lauzun's Legion* on September 20, 1782, promoted to lieutenant on August 15, 1788. Emigrated on August 11, 1791, after serving in the campaign of 1792 in the army of the Princes brothers of the King, and in 1794 and 1795 in the Noble Hussars of Étienne Damas**, he joined the army of Condé. With this corps, he participated in the campaigns of 1796 and 1797, was wounded in the battle of Oberkammlach*** in 1796, transferred to our Regiment during the formation in Russia, participated in the campaign of 1799, and still serves today in our Regiment as a loyal and faithful subject of the King.
In witness whereof, We have issued this Certificate, signed by Our hand, and sealed with Our coat of arms.

* Lauzun's Legion of Foreign Volunteers, also known as Lauzun's Legion, was a mixed military unit (infantry, artillery, and cavalry) composed of foreign volunteers in the service of the Old Regime at the end of the 18th century.
** The hussars of Damas' Legion were a squadron of hussars in Damas' Legion of the army of the émigrés, later forming a regiment in the army of Condé. June 1793: The squadron was created by Count Étienne de Damas-Crux.
