DAHOMEY CAMPAIGNS MEDALS (VOLUME 4)
The continuation of the superb study by Jean Michel Franc, presenting the medals of the Dahomey campaigns, essential for historians and collectors.
The two campaigns in Dahomey have almost gone unnoticed in the history of the colonization of French West Africa. Often marked by skirmishes, a few significant battles did punctuate this phase of colonization. These campaigns revealed an army composed of Amazons: female combatants, fierce, fanatical to the point of giving their lives to their King without hesitation. These campaigns also highlighted a rich local culture that Alfred Dodds, a future general but then a colonel, knew how to appreciate and preserve. The medals, official or unofficial, awarded on this occasion, deserve special interest from collectors both for their quality and their historical significance.
