DRAGOON TRUMPET HELMET, model of November 20, 1858, Second Empire. 26986

The helmet is composed of the following components:
A brass "yellow copper" shell according to regulations, made in one piece stamped at the dome and finished at the hammer. Four suction holes are drilled in the shell. Numbered 505, dated 1871 "71", and marked with the 7th regiment and the 4th regiment of dragoons "7D / 4D" without being able to determine the order of assignment.
A turban in two pieces of half-tanned cowhide, assembled in front and back by a cross-stitched seam. The turban is assembled with the shell by means of four softened flat-head rivets, with counter-rivet washers, that pass through both.
A brass visor, encircled by a band of copper riding on the outer edge. This circle (height on each side 8 millimeters) is joined to the visor by a red copper rivet at each end. It is lined underneath with glued green sheepskin and caught in the setting of the border circle. Visor width at its center 5.5 cm.
A nape guard in brass circled in copper similar to the visor, lined with glued black sheepskin.
A brow band in navy cowhide, dyed in a tawny color and speckled in black to imitate tiger skin (this general tawny dye before the speckling is essential, not only for a more complete imitation of the fur); it is cut to fit exactly at the top under the shell molding and to descend on the visor and nape guard, leaving only about a quarter apparent. At each end, this band is lined inside with a small copper blade pierced with four holes with metal eyelets. On each side, two washers, one lower, the other outer, pierced in the center and joined by a metal eyelet, are fitted where the chin strap rod passes.
Two chin straps, each made up of fourteen flat rings covered, assembled in a curb, decreasing in size. These rings are mounted with a fine brass wire, the points of which are sunk underneath in the leather, on a core of strong black varnished leather, finished with a black varnished calf counter-loop and a buckle with a bar carrying a stud. The two upper rings of the chain, which only present part of their circumference, are integral with a copper rosette 53 millimeters in diameter, bordered by a plain and embossed rim of 16 laurel leaves arranged in rays around a hole pierced in the center.
Each chin strap is attached to the helmet by a copper half-spherical headed screw.
A crest placed on the shell, from front to back; it is in yellow copper and composed of two fins, a mask, and a covering.
The concave-based fins, which form a scalloped edge pierced with two screws in copper, round suet drop-head, which are secured inside the shell with nuts. They are adorned with palmettes and a garland at their upper edge. The rim is decorated with water leaves, all embossed. The mask serves as the anterior joint to the two fins. It is embossed with a relief head of Medusa, topped with a small oak wreath, and at the bottom, above the mask's lamp base, is a grenade in bas-relief. A copper screw at the base of the lamp base. The copper cover is embossed with a relief braid. The ornament of the crest consists of a lower socket, a lens decorated with relief palmettes, and an upper socket, also embellished with palmettes. A scarlet horsehair plume.
A dyed scarlet horsehair mane, length 48 cm.
A brass plume holder decorated with foliage branches.
Interior trim, consisting of a strong black sheepskin cap, cut with 9 wolf teeth, the tips of the teeth equipped with metal eyelets.

Good state of conservation, light dents and marks on the shell, worn and used inner cap, one wolf tooth torn.
