OFFICER'S HELMET OF CUIRASSIERS, model 1872 modified 1874, Third Republic. 29139
Comprising a shell; a visor; a neck guard; a copper band; two chin scales; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament; and an inner lining.
Shell embossed with a pendulum, in planished nickel-plated copper hammered. Pierced at the top with three suction holes.
Visor inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the shell. Edged with a 7.6 mm wide gilded copper circle placed over its edges and fixed at the ends by a rivet. Underside of visor lined with black waxed leather. Visor width 5 cm. Neck guard composed of: a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, featuring three brass nails with hemispherical heads riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a groove, with rounded corners and welded inside, at the bottom of the first band. Like the visor, the neck guard is edged with a gilded copper setting 7 mm wide, placed over it. It is lined with black waxed leather.
Copper band, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adhering to the shell. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the shell in the area concealed by the chin strap boss. Front height of the band 6.5 cm.
Each chin scale is composed of 9 copper decorative leaves cut, embossed in relief with laurel leaves, decreasing in width (max width 4.2 cm, min width 2 cm). These scales are fixed with flattened wire staples on a leather core lined with black velvet. At the other end, against a black varnished calf leather chin strap (replaced). The top scale of each chin strap is finished with a rounded part embossed with a circular rosette featuring relief laurel leaves (rosette diameter 5.3 cm) and attached to the shell with a screw. The shell is topped with a gilded copper crest consisting of two flaps, a mask, and a cover. The flaps, vertically placed 3.2 cm apart at the front and 2.5 cm apart at the back, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at their upper part, connecting to the shell with a concave base forming a scalloped edge. This edge is attached to the shell by 4 copper round-headed drop of suet screws, stopped inside the helmet by square copper nuts. The flaps are adorned with palmettes and a border net at their upper edge; the edge is embossed with water leaves, all in relief. A tinplate plaque joins the upper edges of the flaps, fixing their spacing. The mask serving as the front junction between the two flaps through a solder, embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The cover, also embossed, represents the continuation of Medusa's hair with intertwined serpents. Crest ornament composed of a 2.4 cm high socket, diameter 4.6 cm, embossed with relief water leaves and a 2.5 cm high and 1.9 cm diameter lens, formed by two embossed shells. Fixed on the front of the crest, supporting a scarlet pompon made of tuft of hair (height 4.6 cm).
Mane of black-dyed hair, mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, where the hair is gathered by tinned brass wires with a piece of leather glued with strong glue to the assembly; the empty space between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid starting from the top and following the curve of the crest until its junction with the shell. Mane length 70 cm.
Copper plume holder, embossed, height 3.5 cm, forming a square section socket, fixed obliquely.
Inner lining in black waxed leather, cut into seven wolf teeth each fitted with a metal eyelet.
