CUIRASSIERS HELMET, model 1845, Second Empire. 27042
Bomb in sheet steel stamped on the back with the date 1857 “57” and registered “1385”. The gutter at the base of the bomb is model 1845 with a protruding molding made up of a square thread and another round one. Strong leather turban covered with a black vintage sea cow headband (seal) which laces at the back with eight metal eyelets. Visor and neck cover in sheet steel, each edged with a folded brass rod astride the outer edge. The visor is lined with a green waxed sheepskin, the neck cover is lined with a black waxed sheepskin.
Crest in stamped brass, composed of a mask stamped with a flaming bomb surmounted by a Medusa head in relief with a crown of laurel and oak branches above; the base of the mask is attached to the bomb using an iron screw; two fins struck with a decreasing series of 8 gadroons framed with acanthus leaf and palmette beads and in the upper part with a series of laurel leaves; the base of the crest is cut into a festoon, folded outwards and fixed to the bomb using two round-headed steel screws; cover plate stamped with a decoration depicting a braided mane. Brass crest ornament composed of a lens decorated with palmettes, a socket with laurel branches and palmettes, and a scarlet horsehair puff. Mane of black horsehair, apparent length of approximately 44 cm. Brass plume holder in the shape of a socket decorated with foliage. Model 1845 chinstraps mounted on a leather chin strap covered with a series of three rows of small round rings ending in a rosette stamped with a sun, fixed to the turban by means of a steel screw; the center of the rosette was reinforced by a brass washer marked “HUMMEL JOINVILLE LE PONT”. Interior leather headdress cut into ten wolf teeth.
