HAIR CAP OF THE 3rd REGIMENT OF FOOT GRENADIERS OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD, model of February 18, 1860, Second Empire (1860-1870). 26856-1
Carcass in natural leather, composed of elements sewn together edge to edge. The carcass is cut at an angle at the headpiece, bringing the rear section down. The back of the carcass is slit to form a triangle with a sewn-on leather strap. This allows the size of the headgear to be adapted to the owner's head size. At the front, the cap measures approximately 33 cm high, at the back 44 cm, and 27 cm wide at the top. Black-dyed bearskin, made of several pieces sewn together, is threaded over the carcass and sewn at the bottom with the edge of the bonnet. Sewn-in pencil holder on the left. A small opening is made 16 cm from the lower edge, to accommodate the plumet base. A leather gusset is sewn inside the skin. Two black-lacquered brass hooks, for attaching the chinstrap, are fixed to the inside of the inner cap on either side and protrude from the bottom. Leather chinstrap covered with a curb chain with brass rings.
Calotte (the expression "monkey's butt" was never used at the time, but is a misnomer used by collectors), in scarlet cloth. The shape is round, 12 cm in diameter. In the center is a white grenade embroidered with 9 flames, measuring approximately 10.5 cm high by 7 cm wide (the body of the bomb is 4 cm in diameter). The edges of the sheet are folded in on themselves, then roughly sewn together.
Inner headpiece made of soft enfuir cut with eight wolf's teeth. Ink markings in the carcass "N° 319 / 225 / 94" and of the furrier "PFEIFFER" and hot-stamped of the 3rd Imperial Crown Regiment followed by the inscription "3e Gas dl Gd", label printed with a blue frieze and handwritten "3ème...". and traces of a torn paper label.
Brass plate, 14 cm high by 16 cm wide. Stamped in the center with a crowned eagle resting on a sparkling Jupiter spindle and a bomb cut out with the number "3" (3rd Regiment), on a radiant sun background.
Spherical wooden pompom, flat on the outside with a 4.8 cm tricolor cockade, domed back sheathed in scarlet cloth.
