Dark blue cloth, scarlet piping, braid, embroidered crest of a scarlet wool grenade.
Dark blue cloth cap body with scarlet wool cord piping. These pipings join together on the right side to form a point whose apex reaches the bottom of the cap.
Two elliptical side flaps in dark bleu cloth, edged on the convex side with scarlet wool braid (width 3 cm); these two elliptical pieces are sewn to the body of the cap.
A bright pomegranate embroidered in scarlet wool thread (H 5.6 cm, width 3 cm) is sewn onto the front, in the curvilinear angle formed by the recess in the two flaps.
A daffodil tassel pompom of the 3rd Regiment and scarlet bangs is attached to the front corner of the bonnet peak.
Inner cap entirely in black waxed basane, with leather tab bearing ink stamps; date 4th quarter 1861, regimental number "981" and reverse marking of 3rd regiment "GI 3e G".
