Cartridge box cover for the 1st Regiment of Voltigeurs of the Imperial Guard, Second Empire. 26887
Made of white canvas, rectangular in shape with rounded lower edges. Printed in black ink on the front with a crown framed by a grenade and a hunting horn in each corner. The upper part is designed to fold over the top of the cartridge box. The lower part is trimmed, as well as the sides, with a 3 cm wide canvas to encase the cartridge box. Black ink marking on the back of the 1st Regiment: imperial crown and "1st V.", serial number "3027". Height 21 cm, Width 23 cm.

HISTORICAL:
According to Lieutenant de la Forest-Divonne of the 1st Grenadier Regiment, the cartridge boxes were stored on July 25th. The Guard infantry only retaining the cartridge pouches. This measure was confirmed by General Vinoy on July 31st. However, the cartridge box is depicted in the panorama that Detaille and de Neuville dedicated to the battle of Rezonville (August 16, 1870).
BIOGRAPHY:
Bernard Hyppolyte MÉCHAUX serial number 3027, residing in Paris, born on January 11, 1841 in Blayes, was incorporated into the Guard Voltigeurs on March 15, 1855, arrived at the unit on March 20. He was a young soldier in the 37th Infantry Regiment.
