NOTES:
This luxury pouch is very rare, only one other identical pouch is known from a drawing by Hilpert reproduced in 1924 in the magazine “Le Passepoil” 4th year. This drawing was taken up by Michel Pétard in 1987 in his work “Military Equipment from 1600 to 1870” volume IV from 1804 to 1815 (first part), figure 365, pages 48 and 49. An identical box exists in a private collection (we do not do not know if it is the one reproduced by Hilpert).
The supplier from Saint-Etienne provided luxury equipment for the outfits worn during the coronation of the Emperor. A ceremonial sabretache that belonged to General Savary bears the mark “De S-Etienne belt of the First Consul rue S-Honoré n° 129 opposite la B… in Paris”, number 36, pages 38 and 39 of the catalog.
Catalog of the exhibition “Wasquehal 2004: When Bonaparte became Napoleon” Bernard Croissy expert, exhibition from January 31 to February 22, 2004.
ORIGIN :
General de Pommereul, then his direct lineal descendants, remained in the family castle of B….
ATTRIBUTION:
General François René de Pommereul had three sons: Gilbert, Louis and Jacques-Henri-François, all of whom had a military career. This pouch cannot belong to the general since it was placed inactive before the Empire.
This pouch sheathed in green waxed leather may be linked to a dragoon uniform (rather than to an artillery uniform which is made of blue cloth, which allows Gilbert to be ruled out).
The rich, highly ornamented trimmings are reminiscent of the uniforms of aides-de-camp. The main decoration of the banner depicting a winged dragon is a direct reminder of the officer's career.
The lining of the banner is the color of the distinctive of the 20th dragoon regiment, it is covered with silver braid (color of the buttons of the dragoon uniform, unlike the buttons of the aide uniform). de-camp which are gold).
It is very likely that it was worn by Louis de Pommereul, appointed captain in the 20th dragoon regiment on May 8, 1807, in his service records it is specified "passed in this capacity aide-de-camp to Gal Vandamme on October 29, 1811" , he therefore probably kept his dragoon uniform and not the uniform of the aides-de-camp in blue cloth (according to the regulations of Vendémiaire year XII, confirmed by a watercolor by the author Herbert Knötel which represents an aide-de-camp of General Vandamme in 1813 in blue and gold outfit).
Jacques-Henri-François was also a dragoon, adjutant-major to the 12th dragoon regiment before being appointed aide-de-camp to General Vandamme on April 19, 1808. However, he participated with his regiment in the Battle of Eylau on February 8, 1807, his service records mention that he was taken prisoner by the Russian army on February 14 near the town of Koenisberg, after having been injured by several “deep” spear blows and a gunshot “on the left side”, his horse killed under him, which earned him the Legion of Honor. We can assume that upon returning to France, he took up his new position in the uniform of the aides-de-camp.
