ROIZE-BOYER (Costume makers in Marseille 1802-1994)
This family business which made the heyday of the St.Maura district was located on Avenue Rostand.
"The latter will be succeeded by his son Aristide II and then his grandson Aristide III. The House will go so far as to have two workshops and around thirty employees.
The following year Aristide Boyer offered, in addition, a series of pieces enriching this first collection.
The Municipal Archives has more than 2,500 documents, a treasure trove for studying the history of stage costumes.
The adventure began in 1802 when Joseph ROIZE founded his clothing house.
His son, Jacques, succeeds him. But it is Charles ROIZE, grandson of the Founder, who will give its scale to this House by supplying, in addition to the Marseille Theaters, those of the Capital, the Provinces, and the colonies.
An artist himself, he designs many costumes.
Just before his death in 1885, he was Director of the Grand Théâtre de Marseille, a consecration for this man entirely devoted to the performing arts.
It was his son, Louis ROIZE, who sold the business to Aristide BOYER in 1912.
Today, an in-depth scientific study remains to be carried out. However, the richness and quality of the drawings, watercolors and lithographs preserved never cease to delight the eye of the amateur.
