Body of the shako in blackened leather, in the shape of a truncated oblique cone, H 13 cm. Braid at the top of the shako, bourdalou and two bands forming an inverted V on each side, in black patent leather. Black lacquered metal vent on each side. Green waxed square visor underneath hot stamped with a “C”.
Brass plate stamped in relief of the engineer's breastplate surmounted by the pot at the head with at the bottom a flaming grenade cut out with the number "3", an oak branch and a laurel branch, an ax and a crossed sword; H 12.5 cm. Double scarlet and green wool pompom. Tricolor lacquered metal roundel embossed with a radiant sun, diameter 5 cm.
Inner headdress made up of a black waxed leather headband. Chin strap in black waxed leather. Cap inside the shako has a black printed paper label with the imperial eagle and marked “Régiment D... / Vintage 1865 / Order number 3309”.
