BIOGRAPHY :
SEARCHED Georges, Jean, Clément. Born in 1909 in Paris, Died in 1994 in Leucate.
Appointed official naval painter in 1947.
Initially intended for the navy, his health forced him to give it up. Georges Fouillé then turned to maritime painting, named titular painter of the navy, he embarked on the Richelieu in 1949.
Fouille wanted to combine art with historical research. Georges Fouillé brings a historian's precision to his work.
Mr. Fouillé also made figurines of toy soldiers as well as dioramas and models.

HISTORY:
The Music of the 1st Regiment of Foot Grenadiers of the Imperial Guard:

ORIGIN :
It was in 1762 that the first “regimental music” was created (that is to say at the expense of the State, before this date the bands, just as the regiments belonged to the colonels)
“The French Guards Music Band” composed of 16 performers and unique in its kind, it was dissolved at the dawn of the turmoil in 1789. Some surviving musicians were brought together under the baton of Citizen Musician Sarrette, employed by the state. - major of the National Guard of Paris who “pushed” for the recreation of music. Supported by the City of Paris, the Music of the National Guard of Paris was increased to 70 musicians, but unfortunately was dissolved again in 1792, the City no longer having the financial means. The Masters of Churches having also been abolished, music teaching no longer exists in France, artists who live as musicians will change professions or emigrate. However, Mr. Sarrette persevered and, supported by Chénier, he obtained the creation of the “National Institute of Music” on 12 Thermidor Year III, (ancestor of our current Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique de Paris). Made up of 120 musician-teachers, it will then supply the major orchestras of Paris and France, but also the newly created Music of the Guard of the Directory. This music became by decree the Music of the Guard of the Consuls, then on May 18, 1804, Music of the 1st Regiment of Grenadiers on Foot of the Imperial Guard, an immortal phalanx of experienced musicians, directed for nearly 12 years by Michel-Joseph Gebauer.

COMPOSITION :
From 50 instrumentalists, 1 conductor and 2 assistant conductors in July 1800, its workforce was reduced to 45 musicians and a conductor in June 1804, then 40 musicians in August 1806, and finally 21 musicians and 1 conductor in September 1810, this workforce will not move again until the fall of the Empire. Dressed in a superb uniform all adorned with gold, white nankeen breeches and vests, “Suvarov” style boots, bicorne with red and white plumetis topped with a white egret with a red base, and gold clovers on the shoulders, gave them the name: “Birds of Paradise”. Unlike the drummers, these musicians were not soldiers and had the status of hired hands. Formed in three rows of seven musicians, this magnificent music marched behind the drums. The 1st rank called: “Turkish rank” was composed of percussion: 1 snare drum, 1 rolling drum, two cymbal players including one dressed in the oriental style like the Mamelukes, 1 bass drum stamped with the coat of arms of the Empire, 1 triangle and the famous Chinese hat (which only the music of the Foreign Legion still preserves today).
The 2nd row says: “row of woodwinds” composed of: 2 bassoons, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets in C and 2 flutes in F. Finally the 3rd row called the “rank of great music” composed of: 2 trombones whose bell was finished with a dragon's head with a red mouth, 2 snakes (ancestor of our current tuba) 1 trumpet and 2 horns in B. Chief Michel Joseph Gebauer walked to the left of the 1st row next to the triangle and was equipped with a small cane stick and was very proud of his sergeant major stripes. This indisputable best music of the time performed, like the Republican Guard of today, all the services of honor of the Empire, as well as all the prestigious parades and aubades of the Court, both in France and abroad. 'Stranger.
