BIBLIOGRAPHY
Guy Arnoux, born August 26, 1886 in Paris 7th and died August 5, 1951 in Ardon (Loiret), is a French artist, illustrator and graphic designer.
Biography
Guy Arnoux has illustrated nearly eighty books, including several large formats of remarkable print quality published by Devambez. At the end of the 1914-18 War, he took part in charming little books for children: Le bon Anglais, Carnet d'un permissionnaire, Nos frères d'Amérique... Between 1912 and 1925 he collaborated with the fashion magazine very prominent, the Gazette du Bon Ton.
He was interested in the most varied fields of decorative art: decorations for ocean liners (including Le Lafayette in 1930), advertisements, games, posters, menus, programs, costumes, fans, scarves, and even shoes.
He designed a typeface, entitled Guy-Arnoux capital, which he produced in 1914 at the request of Georges Peignot for the G. Peignot & Fils Foundry.
Coming from a military family, the army and patriotism are his favorite themes, sometimes going as far as a certain chauvinistic naivety. In 1921, he was appointed "painter of the Navy Department", on the occasion of his embarkation on board the Pourquoi pas?, sent on a mission to the Arctic.
In 1945, he illustrated a children's book for Alsatia editions: Three campaigns in Alsace: 1674, 1793, 1944. Children's books did not occupy an important place in all of his work.
His line is recognizable: a black ring and large flat areas, very often made with stencils. He is the representative of a new popular art, both modern and traditional.
He is part of the Cercle des Mortigny, founded by Dimitri d'Osnobichine in 1908, which brings together many artists and regulars of Parisian life: Paul Poiret, Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Pierre Brissaud, Georges Villa, Joë Hamman, Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scevola, Joseph Pinchon, André Warnod, Pierre Troisgros, Jean Routier, Henri Callot, Pierre Falize, Pierre Prunier, a circle that operated until the 1950s.
He died in 1951, near Orleans, in Ardon, in the family property called La Rousselière, after a day of hunting.
