OFFICER'S HELMET OF CUIRASSIERS, model 1872, modified 1874, Third Republic. 26379

Comprising a skull; a visor; a neck guard; a copper band; two chin scales; a crest; a mane; a plume holder; a crest ornament; and an interior lining. The skull is embossed with a balance, made of planished nickel-plated copper hammered. It is pierced at the top with three suction holes. The visor is tilted at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the skull. It is edged with a 7.6 mm wide gilded copper circle laid flat on its edges and fixed at the ends with a rivet. The underside of the visor is lined with green leather. The visor's width is 5 cm. The neck guard is composed of a circular band on its flat side, welded under the rear edge of the band it extends, with three brass nails with half-spherical heads riveted inside; and a second concave band, forming a groove, with rounded angles and welded inside at the bottom of the first band. Like the visor, the neck guard is bordered with a 7 mm wide gilded copper setting laid flat. It is lined with black waxed leather. The copper band, stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adheres to the skull. Its base rests on the visor, and its ends are riveted to the skull in the part covered by the chin scales rosette. The height of the band at the front is 6.5 cm. Each chin scale consists of 9 embossed copper ornamental leaves, progressively decreasing in width (maximum width 4.2 cm, minimum width 2 cm). These scales are fastened with flattened wire pins on a core of leather lined with black velvet. At the other end, a black varnished veal strap (replaced). The top scale of each chin strap is finished with a rounded part stamped with a rosette in a circular shape depicting relief laurel leaves (rosette diameter 5.3 cm) and fixed to the skull with a screw. The skull is topped with a gilded copper crest consisting of two fins, a mask, and a covering. The fins, placed vertically at a distance of 3.2 cm in the front and 2.5 cm at the back, are in the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at their upper part, connecting to the skull with a concave base forming a scalloped edge. This edge is fixed to the skull with 4 round-headed copper screws that are secured inside the helmet with square copper nuts.

The fins are decorated with palm leaves and a border net at their upper edge; the edge is embossed with water leaves, everything is embossed in relief. A tinned metal plate joins the upper edges of the fins, fixing their spacing. The mask, serving as the anterior junction of the two fins by means of a weld, is embossed with a relief head of Medusa. The covering, also embossed, represents the continuation of Medusa's hair with intertwined snakes. The crest ornament consists of a 2.4 cm high socket, 4.6 cm in diameter, embossed with relief water leaves and a 2.5 cm high by 1.9 cm diameter lentil, formed by two embossed shells. It is fixed to the front of the crest and supports a scarlet pompom of tufted horsehair (height 4.6 cm). The black-dyed horsehair mane is mounted on a strong nourished cowhide sole, in which the horsehair is assembled by tinned brass threads with a piece of basanite glued to the strong glue on the assembly. The space left blank between the two rows of horsehair is filled with a braid starting in the center and following the curve of the crest to its junction with the skull. The mane's length is 80 cm. The copper plume holder, embossed, is 3.5 cm in height, forming a square-section socket, fixed obliquely. The interior lining is glossy brown leather, cut into seven wolf teeth each fitted with a metal eyelet.
