Obverse: In the foreground, two draped women holding hands with a sword at their feet and two plaques inscribed with "SCIENTIA" and "1872" (date of engraving of the medal). In the background, a city can be observed. At the top of the medal, the inscription reads "PAR * LA * SCIENCE * POUR * LA * PATRIE *".
Reverse: A woman, surrounded by scientific works and instruments (a compass and a square), is reading a scientific book in the countryside. Below the woman, a cartouche bears the name of the person who received the medal, "CHARLES CHAUVES". Surrounding the engraving is a circle with the name of the organization that awarded the medal, "FRENCH ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCES * MERGED WITH THE SCIENTIFIC ASSOCIATION OF FRANCE".
Edge: Engraving of the event for which the medal was awarded, "NICE CONGRESS 1943".
