SIEGE OF ROME MEDAL OF 1849, created in 1850, Papal States, Second Empire. 15129
Made of patinated bronze, round in shape, of Italian manufacture signed "NC", Nicola Cerbara, 32 mm in diameter. The obverse features a papal mitre set on two crossed keys within a laurel wreath, bordered by the inscription "SEDES APOSTOLICA ROMANA", Roman Apostolic See. The reverse bears the inscription "PIVS IX PONT.MAX. / ROMAE RESTITUTUS / CATHOLICIS / ARMIS / COLLATIS / AN. MDCCCXLIX", Pope Pius IX restored to Rome by the union of Catholic armies in the year 1849. Ribbon in papal colors of yellow edged with two wide vertical white stripes. Fixed ring for suspension.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Established by Pope Pius IX in memory of the siege of Rome by French troops who came to the Pope's aid, as he had been driven from his capital by Garibaldi's forces. This medal was awarded to military personnel who took part in the expeditionary force commanded by General Oudinot in 1849.
