Round silver medal, hallmarks on the edge, diameter 30 mm. First type production in use until 1913 with the appearance of the second type. Engraved by Georges Lemaire, in relief, based on a design by the Navy painter Marie Saulnier de la Pinelais. Obverse featuring the effigy of the helmeted and laurel-crowned Republic surrounded by the legend "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE," reverse depicting a world map resting on a military trophy above the legend "MÉDAILLE COLONIALE." Large biconical suspension loop.
Suspension loop formed by two laurel branches. Ribbon in slightly sun-faded sky blue silk, with 7mm-wide central white vertical stripes and 2mm-wide side stripes.
