On the obverse, within a laurel wreath, a circle of blue enamel with the inscription "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE - 1870" and a profile of the Republic; on the reverse, the motto "VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE".
The medal is topped with a trophy of arms symbolizing the French army from land and sea.
The reverse of the trophy is flat, without the back of the cuirass, connected to the medal by a ring.
Yellow ribbon bordered with a green trim.
