Light cavalry... With these words, the most beautiful cavalry units of the 19th century, heirs of the Napoleonic epic, are resurrected. Great swordsmen but also executioners of hearts, Hunters on horseback and Hussars waged war in all theaters of operations, from the conquest of Algeria to the Crimea and Mexico, from the charges of 1870 to the reconnaissance of August 1914. Driven by an esprit de corps pushed to the extreme, they are accustomed to excesses, from courage in combat to the escapades of garrison life... This book aims to bring these exceptional characters back to life, from celebrities to simple troopers, again dressed in the shimmering uniforms of an army imbued with warrior spirit.
The success of Napoleon III's La Garde Impériale encouraged us to continue with this book on light cavalry, and begin a real documentary series on the French army from the years 1845-1915.
The 19th century then reached its fullness. For the French army, this “golden age” is characterized by a growing gap between the war romanticism which remains its own and the considerable development of the destructive potential of weapons. The traditions of panache and dash, particularly honored by the Chasseurs à cheval and Hussars, are rooted in Napoleonic memory. This remains alive even after the fall of Napoleon III, as the bitter memory of the defeat of 1870 imposes the reference to imperial glories. As for the rules of mounted warfare, they may seem immutable beyond adjustments to the regulations. It is only the theaters of operations that evolve. Unlike reserve cavalry (Carabiniers and Cuirassiers) or line cavalry (Dragons and Lancers), the image of the “light” is enriched with a certain exoticism. Hunters and Hussars took part in the conquest of Algeria as in other overseas campaigns such as the Mexican expedition.
The study of uniforms not only contributes to understanding the spirit of the times, but also to understanding more closely the personality of those who wear them. Linked to the personnel registers, the markings of the uniforms make it possible to reveal the names of those of whom we never speak in detail - the enlisted men -, and thus to know their career and background. As for officers, the use of nominative files also proves to be rich in information as long as a uniform is assigned or a mention appears on the back of a photo.
The chosen period indeed coincides with the birth and then the rise of photography. From the reign of Louis-Philippe to the last days of the Belle Époque, magnificent images have been transmitted to us, still rarely found in existing documentation. Alongside the uniforms, we once again wanted to give a central place to these documents, especially since our modern software allows them to restore their original splendor. The two ends of the period are distinguished by a few daguerreotypes prior to 1855 as well as by the first autochromes produced from 1907 following the work of Louis Lumière. In both cases, we will be sensitive to the gap between the modernity of the support and the tradition of which the costume carries.
