PLUME BADGE OF AN OFFICER OF THE NATIONAL GUARD OF THE CITY OF ORLÉANS, Constitutional Monarchy, 1789-1792.
Made of gilded brass, embossed in relief, bordered by a double smooth raised molding with a palmetto at the top. Rich decoration representing two medallions: one featuring three fleur-de-lis and the other the Coat of Arms of the city of Orléans. These two medallions are placed on a smooth shield and separated by a sword pointing upwards. The shield is topped by the royal crown, itself surmounted by a Phrygian cap surrounded by a crown of stars and a ribbon bearing the motto "VIVRE LIBRE OU MOURIR" (Live free or die). In the background of the shield, the plaque is decorated with a bundle of flags, weapons, musical instruments, royal scepter, bundle of fasces, cuirass, oak branch and laurel branch, Table of Laws, drum, cannon, cannonballs, and a flaming bomb in each of the two lower corners. The edges are folded inwards, reinforced by a steel wire forming a loop at the top for attachment to the plume, and pierced with two holes in each lower corner for fastening. Height 15.5 cm, width with curvature 23 cm and without curvature 19.5 cm.
