France.
20th century.
NOTE:
Christian Blondieau in his work "Plaques of shakos, czapkas, fur hats... Part 2: the lilies, the rooster, the eagle 1814-1870" explains: "At this time, the royal gendarmerie wears a hat and a white cockade held by a cord, with the elite gendarmerie wearing a helmet. Only the gendarmerie of Corsica wears a black felt shako with a silver metal plate as per regulations, with an inscription on the base stating 'royal gendarmerie.'"
However, there is a copper plaque of "fusiliers" type from the royal guard with a base band bearing the stamped legend "royal gendarmerie" at the Gendarmerie Museum in Melun. This model is designated for the gendarmerie of the Seine.
