HELMET FOR THE TROOP OF THE REPUBLICAN GUARD ON HORSEBACK, model 1876, Third Republic.

Helmet entirely made of steel. It consists of a shell marked "3039", a visor and a neck cover both edged with a brass strip folded over the outer edge, a headband, two chinstraps, a crest, a mane made of black horsehair approximately 98 cm long, and a plume holder. All fittings are made of brass.
The shell, made in one piece, is stamped. It is pierced inside with 4 vent holes for ventilation. The visor is lined with waxed green Morocco leather, and the lining of the neck cover is missing.
Brass headband embossed in relief with two laurel branches tied together by a ribbon; in the center, above the branches, the coat of arms of the City of Paris is depicted.
Crest composed of two fins embossed in relief with a decreasing series of flutes surrounded by a beaded ribbon and separated by acanthus leaves and a flower. Each fin is attached to the shell by two brass screws; the embossed mask has 4 horizontally striped ribbons separated by three smooth ribbons, at the bottom a palmette is embossed in relief and at the top a head of Medusa, also embossed in relief; the top of the crest is partially covered with a "cover plate" representing in relief the hair of the head of Medusa, welded on the sides and pierced at the front.
Crest ornament composed of a brass olive embossed with foliage, a brass socket embossed with laurel leaves, and a scarlet horsehair plume 5.5 cm high. This ornament is attached to the crest by a threaded brass rod.
The chinstraps are made up of two chin pieces of strong cowhide covered with black waxed Morocco leather each covered with fifteen scalloped brass scales alternately with two or three scallops and fastened to the leather. At the lower end, the last scale is rounded, and at the outer end the scale has two scallops stamped in one piece with a round rosette. The chinstraps are attached to the shell with a lock and are connected to each other by a leather strap replaced posteriorly. Tubular brass plume holder with slightly tapered square section towards the base.
Interior lining made of goatskin cut into seven wolf teeth.

Good condition, the steel parts have the usual oxidation to be cleaned, the mane remains in its original length.
