VATICAN, MEDAL OF THE SIEGE OF ROME IN 1849, Second Empire. 21251
In patinated bronze, round shape, diameter 32 mm. On the obverse, it depicts my papal mitre placed on two crossed keys within a laurel wreath, the outer edge bears the inscription "SEDES APOSTOLICA ROMANA". On the reverse, it bears the inscription "PIVS IX PONT.MAX. / ROMAE RESTITUTUS / CATHOLICIS / ARMIS / COLLATIS / AN. MDCCCXLIX". Yellow ribbon with white borders. Suspension ring.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Created by Pope Pius IX in memory of the siege of Rome by the French troops who came to the Pope's rescue, expelled from his capital by Garibaldi's forces. This medal was awarded to the military personnel participating in the expeditionary force led by General Oudinot in 1849.
