BEARSKIN CAP OF THE NATIONAL GUARD OF THE CITY OF ORLEANS, Constitutional Monarchy, 1789-1792.
Frame made of natural leather, consisting of elements sewn edge to edge and covered with bear fur, with an opening on its left side for the plume, 22 cm from the lower edge. Round crown made of scarlet cloth, diameter 17.5 cm, decorated with two white woolen braids forming a cross, each braid 2.3 cm wide.
Relief brass plate, edged with a double smooth projecting molding and topped with a palmetto. Rich decoration depicting two medallions: one with three fleur-de-lis topped with a royal crown and the other with the Arms of the city of Orleans. These two medallions are placed on a smooth shield and separated by a sword pointing upwards crowned with a Phrygian cap adorned with a row of stars, and a ribbon bearing the motto "VIVRE LIBRE OU MOURIR" (Live Free or Die). In the background of the shield, the plate is decorated with a bundle of flags, weapons, musical instruments, royal scepter, fasces, drums, oak branch, laurel branch, cannons, cannonballs, and a flaming bomb in each of the two lower corners. The edges are folded over themselves on the inside, reinforced by a steel wire forming a loop at the top for attachment to the cap, and pierced with two holes in each lower corner for fastening. Height 15 cm, width with the curve 22.5 cm. White wool cord, consisting of a simple braid at the back, 3.8 cm wide, and a simple braid at the front, 3.5 cm wide. The cord is finished with an oval-shaped plaque, height 13.5 cm, width 8.4 cm, braided with three strands; this plaque is finished with a tassel with a Milanese-knotted cabochon on a 4 cm wooden shape, ending with soft fringes of 5.8 cm. Interior headgear composed of a band made of old calf leather previously topped with canvas (now missing).
