HISTORY:
The 1816 reward sabers are in fact the old sabers of the Second Company of Musketeers, model 1814, called "Black Musketeers". In 1816 during the dismissal of the two companies of Musketeers, it was decided to use the sabers of the Second Company still remaining in store to transform them into sabers of reward. To do this, the Musketeers cross present on the frame is leveled off and a silvered copper medallion stamped with the Great Arms of France is riveted to it. On the clevis is engraved the words “Given by the King to Mr…”, and the blade which was originally white (without any engraving) is now engraved “VIVE LE ROI”.
Hence the fact that the back of the blade is originally engraved with the name of the factory and dated 1814, the date of the creation of the Second Company of Musketeers of the Maison Militaire du Roi.
