JOLLY (Colonel Louis-Claude): Original watercolors, Military Scenes from the First Empire. 16875
By Colonel Louis Claude Jolly, born in 1775 and died of cholera in Compiègne in 1832. Serving as a gendarme in the Consuls' Horse Chasseurs in 1786, he was part of the Vélites.
The first watercolor could be titled "Life at the camp", with two horses and their riders in the foreground. One is in the uniform of a cuirassier officer and observes the other, who is in the uniform of the 2nd Hussars, rummaging through his sabretache. In the background of buildings and horses, two soldiers can be seen grappling with each other.
The second watercolor, "The Droguet Game", depicts a card game popular among sailors and soldiers of the Empire in the early 19th century. The name comes from a wooden element shaped like a clothespin made by players and meant to be worn on the nose by the loser of the previous game, who could wear several layered on top of each other. This game has been forgotten, and the rules are unknown.
Under the amused gaze of the innkeeper smoking a pipe, a foot soldier around 1812-1813 is shown sitting on a bench, facing off in a card game with a trumpeter from the 9th Hussars, indicated by the number 9 on his sabretache. The foot soldier must perform a challenge by stacking clothespins on his nose and keeping them balanced until he wins the game.
Great attention to detail is given, from uniforms, sabretaches, dolmans, shakos, colbacks, and other gear, all treated with realism, as well as the weapons, rifles or sabres, and the horse harnesses.
These two works have been preserved since their creation in charming frames covered with embossed and gilded Empire-era papers. The decoration consists of alternating flowers and lotus leaves, a frieze of acanthus leaves, and two cords adorned with wicker patterns.
These objects are full of charm, and we have decided to keep them in their original state to preserve their authenticity. Frame dimensions are 32.5 cm x 27 cm. Watercolor dimensions are 18 cm x 13 cm.
Framed under glass in their original frames.
