INFANTRY OFFICER'S SABER, MODEL 1855, ATTRIBUTED TO C A.R. M J CHÉRISEY FOR THE BATTLE OF CASTELFIDARDO, SECOND EMPIRE.
Brass hilt similar to the 1845 model with a narrower design, featuring three branches forming a guard decorated with an oak branch and laurel branch against a background of flag banners. Long pommel cap adorned with an oak branch, laurel, and a palmette. Horn handle with missing wire wrap. Red cloth knot (sun-faded). Slightly curved blade with hollow flats, the back engraved "C A.R. M J CHÉRISEY FOR THE BATTLE OF CASTELFIDARDO," length 73.5 cm. Steel scabbard with two suspension rings mounted in reverse, likely for a left-handed individual.
Fair condition, missing gilt on the hilt, missing wire wrap, blade with oxidation, heavily rusted scabbard.

BIOGRAPHY:
CHARLES DE CHÉRISEY, born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Seine-et-Oise) on July 17, 1822. Served in the Royal Guard. Enlisted as F. B., matricule 66, on June 1, 1860; promoted to Second Lieutenant on August 30, 1860. Retired with his rank on January 1, 1861. Resigned on March 16, 1861. Fought in the Battle of Castellidardo. During the France campaign: Captain in the Mobiles of Moselle, stationed in Metz. Knight of the Order of Pius IX; received the Castelfidardo medal. Passed away on February 9, 1875.
