SHAKO OF THE 72nd LINE INFANTRY REGIMENT, model 1810, First Empire. 27280-14846

The body of the shako consists of felt 21.5 cm high. It is covered by a very strong waxed cowhide cap with a diameter of 25.5 cm folded over the felt to a height of 4 cm. At the bottom of the felt, a bourdalou (or bourdaloue) in plain cowhide, 2.8 cm wide, is sewn, at the back a copper buckle, with its pin, under this buckle will be a simple calfskin gusset, to facilitate the game of bourdalou. A visor in strong patent cowhide will be attached to the front of the schako, it measures 5.5 cm below and 5 cm above, it makes a semi-circle and its roundness is 31 cm. A brass rod was adapted and placed folded astride the outer edge in a traditional manner, probably during a campaign.
Missing interior cap.
Plaque (or escutcheon) affixed to the front, it is in brass stamped in relief in a diamond shape, stamped with the number 72, framed by a double protruding molding, height 10.5 cm, width 9.5 cm.
Roundel placed above the plate, in painted leather secured to the felt with a brass point on each side. This cockade is in three colors, it measures 6.5 cm in diameter. The white circle is on the outside, then the red and blue in the center.
Under the cockade a gusset intended for the powder puff, attached by a seam to the felt.
Chinstraps. On each side of the shako is placed a chinstrap, made up of a double sheepskin strap, on which are mounted 16 brass scales cut alternately into two or three festoons, plus a fifteenth, circular in shape, at the end. The first scale is 4 cm wide, the second a little less and thus decreasing until the last which is 2 cm. All these scales are each stopped by a flat iron wire. The chinstrap is secured by a rosette, named in the 1812 regulation "large button" of the same metal as the chinstrap, having 4 cm in diameter. In the middle of this “button” is stamped with a five-pointed star and around it a single thread stamped in relief. At the end of each mump will be a cord of wire, to attach the chin strap under the chin.
Round scarlet wool pompom, 7.5 cm in diameter. It is placed on the shako above the roundel.
