SADDLE COVER AND PAIR OF CHAPERONS BELONGING TO ACHILLE FERDINAND DE LA CROIX DE BEAUREPOS, GENDARME AT THE KING'S HOUSEHOLD, Restoration period (1814-1816).
Pair of ochre leather chaperons marked with a quill on the back "4 B BEAUREPOS". This part measures 12.5 cm in height, 12.5 cm in width, and approximately 4.5 cm in thickness. Two leather straps are sewn on for attachment to the saddle strings. They are covered with three rounded quarter-pieces at the bottom, made of canvas covered with black velvet bordered with a double gold braid (outer braid is 3.2 cm wide, inner braid is 1.5 cm wide) as well as a scarlet wool piping of 3 mm in width. The quarters are lined with brown waxed leather. The upper quarter is approximately 9.5 cm in height, the center quarter is 22 cm high, with 13 cm visible, and the lower quarter is 33 cm high, with 10.5 cm visible.
Saddle cover in canvas entirely covered with black velvet bordered by a double gold braid woven in the style of the King's Household gendarmes; the outer braid is 3.5 cm wide, the inner braid is 1.7 cm. The outer perimeter of the cover is scarlet-piped, 3 mm wide. In the two back corners, a flaming thunderbolt with sparks is embroidered in threads, bullion, sequins, and golden lamé over a height of 19.5 cm and a width of 16 cm. Rectangular dark brown waxed leather gussets measuring 32 cm in height, 29 cm in width. This cover is lined with white twill with blue stripes, and inside is marked "Beaurepos D. No. 16". Height of each side of the saddle cover (folded in half) 46.5 cm at the front, 62 cm at the back, width at the top 89 cm, width at the bottom 97 cm.
Condition:
Chaperons: in good condition, the velvet is in very good condition, not sun-faded, the braids are slightly oxidized, the scarlet pipings are in quite good condition with numerous moth holes.
Saddle cover: perfect condition, close to new, slight oxidation on the outer edge of the wide braid, some moth holes, and sun fading on the scarlet piping.
PROVENANCE:
This set comes from the descendants of Achille Ferdinand de la Croix de Beaurepos, gendarme in the 4th brigade in 1814.
