BRIGADE GENERAL PAUL DE CLAUZADE DE MAZIEUX'S SWORD, 1872 MODEL, DERIVED FROM THE 1817 TYPE, THIRD REPUBLIC.

SWORD:
Gilt bronze hilt, relief-moulded with a crown of oak and laurel leaves over a bundle of flags, encircled by two riveted silver stars. Foldable counter-hilt with a spring mechanism, relief-moulded with oak and laurel leaves.
Tortoiseshell handle with gilded filigree.
Double-edged blade.
Black varnished leather scabbard with two gilt brass fittings (leather replaced at a later date).
In very good condition.

SWORD KNOT:
Senior officer's fine sword knot, Third Republic. Black silk cord with a gold bullion tassel and large twisted fringes, known as "spinach seeds." In very good condition.

BELT AND SWORD BELT:
Dark blue waxed leather belt with blue silk braid with four gold stripes (belt width 3.9 cm). Round gilt brass buckles embossed with a Medusa head (diameter 4.1 cm), connected by an S-shaped hook representing a two-headed serpent. Near-new condition.

SWORD'S PROVENANCE:
This sword belonged to Colonel Paul de Clauzade de Mazieux, commanding officer of the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment, born in Toulouse on August 12, 1841, and passed away on November 1, 1902.
Second Lieutenant in the 6th Cuirassier Regiment in 1859 (promoted to Lieutenant in 1861, and Captain in 1868).
Captain Instructor at the Cavalry School in 1872, then served in the 9th Cuirassiers (1873), 17th Dragoons (1873), and again at the Cavalry School (1874).
Major in the 2nd Cuirassiers in 1882.
Squadron Commander in the 17th Dragoons in 1886.
Lieutenant Colonel in the 11th Hussars (1890), 10th Cuirassiers (1890), and 29th Dragoons (1891).
Colonel of the 2nd Cuirassiers in 1894.
Served in the General Staff of the 1st military corps of the Algerian division, Méséa subdivision in 1899.
Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1885.
Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1896 (as colonel of the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment).
Commander of the Imperial Order of St. Anne of Russia.
Cavalry Brigade General. From the 44th class of the Special Military School of Saint-Cyr (1859-1861), Nice and Savoie class. Third Republic General's sword belt and sword.
