Military uniforms under the Restoration are among the most luxurious and varied that the French Army has worn. A period too often neglected by authors, it nonetheless remains a pivotal era in the history of France and a very rich and inexhaustible source for collectors of objects, figurinists or lovers of old costumes.
Auguste, Louis Victor de Moltzheim (1822-1881). A talented and precise artist, produced numerous series of watercolor drawings and plates on the uniforms of the Armies of the Restoration and the Second Empire; this taste very probably came from his professional observations, since he had embraced a military career. A unique work in the world both in its quality and its importance. To do this, Éditions du Canonnier worked in close collaboration with their printer, for more than six months, numerous tests were carried out to guarantee subscribers a completely exceptional result in its faithful reproduction of Captain Moltzheim's watercolors.
This book, the most complete on the subject, faithfully reproduces in full page 612 original unpublished watercolors thus illustrating all the bodies of troops of the line army and of

Colossal work, undertaken by Auguste de Moltzheim in 1875. He worked on it without interruption
until 1881, the date of his death. The sources used were: the regulations and plates of Bardin, the Regulations inserted in the Military Journal, the Ordinances, works and engravings of the time. We have sought, through judicious use and in-depth criticism of all these materials, to approach regulatory accuracy as closely as possible. The characters represented are not dry and straight men either, each plate is, at the same time, a small genre painting.
After the death of Auguste de Moltzheim, the painter Gramond completed the work by creating the 12 missing watercolors of the Horse Artillery, for which he used Moltzheim's research work.
In March 1928, the painter Pierre Bénigni continued the execution of a few watercolors to complete the series of mounted troops.
In a perfect state.
