OFFICER'S BEARSKIN HAT PLATE OF THE NATIONAL GUARD, Constitutional Monarchy, 1789-1792.
Made of gilded brass, embossed in relief, bordered by a double smooth projecting molding with a palmette at the top. Rich decoration featuring two medallions: one adorned with three fleur-de-lis topped with the royal crown, and the other with a bundle of fasces with the motto "LIBERTIES CONSTITUTION," topped by a civic crown. These two medallions are separated by an upward-pointing sword, a hand of justice, and a royal scepter. The sword is topped with a Phrygian cap crowned with stars and a ribbon bearing the inscription "VIVRE LIBRE OU MOURIR" (Live free or die). In the background of the escutcheon, the plate is decorated with a bundle of flags, weapons, musical instruments, oak and laurel branches, drum, cannons, cannonballs, and a lit bomb in each of the two lower angles. The edges are folded over themselves on the inside, originally reinforced by a steel wire now missing. It is neatly pierced at the bottom with two small holes in each corner, two in the center, and one at the top. Height 15.3 cm, width with curvature 22.7 cm and without curvature 21.6 cm.
Very good condition, the plate has retained its gilding which is extremely rare, with two small cracks at the lower part and one on the right side.
