ROYAL GUARD DRAGOON TROOP HELMET, MODEL 1816, RESTORATION PERIOD (1817-1823).

The decrees of August 30 and December 6, 1815 maintained the helmet for cuirassiers and dragoons. However, the appearance of this headgear was completely modified. The dome, turban, crest, and chinstraps were preserved. The arms of the princes, after whom the regiment was named, were placed at the base of the crest, at the front. The mane, which was criticized for getting in the eyes of the cavalrymen and blinding them in high winds, was removed and replaced with a black horsehair caterpillar and a steel neck guard encircled with copper to protect the neck.

However, this helmet did not satisfy for long. In 1817, the scale chinstraps were replaced with chain links attached to a leather band, which could be raised and fastened to a hook fixed in the middle of the front of the helmet when the chinstrap was not under the chin. Decision of August 14, 1817. "The movable scale chinstraps, adapted to the helmets of carabiniers, cuirassiers, and dragoons, will be removed and replaced, in 1818, by a copper chain with rounded links arranged as a curb chain and doubled with leather fixed on the right side, leaving three links extending beyond the leather at its opposite end, designed to adjust the chain to its point, using a hook fixed on the left side of the headgear. A hook will be fixed in the middle of the helmet and at the front, to which the chain will be attached when not secured under the chin. An additional link will be added at its center and outside, for this hook."

Completely made of brass.

The dome is Minerva-shaped, with the bottom fitted with a gutter to prevent water infiltration under the turban. Approximately 10 cm in height.

The turban consists of a leather band covered with spotted dark brown seal skin to imitate a panther skin forming a point at the front. 7 cm in height.

The visor (7.5 cm) and neck guard (approximately 5 cm) made of black waxed leather covered with seal skin, encircled with a brass strip bent over the outer edge, sewn to the turban.

The chinstraps are composed of two parts: a soft leather chin strap (width 2.1 cm) covered with a curb chain consisting of interlaced round rings (diameter 1.9 cm) (full length of the chain approximately 39 cm). In the center, the curb chain is supplemented with two small round rings of 1.2 cm in diameter to suspend the chin strap on the hook at the bottom of the crest mask; the rosette is round (diameter 4.5 cm) in stamped brass with a fleur-de-lis framed by a prominent molding, with a central hook to receive the chin strap.

Square-section plume holder not in the model.

The crest (H12 cm) is made of brass with stamped decorations: the finials are struck with a large oak branch occupying the entire space; the mask is stamped with an oak leaf and at the base the Arms of France, with the Order of the Holy Spirit stamped in relief and a chin strap suspension hook. The original Arms of France have been hammered, and a more exquisite emblem of the same has been reattached.

The mane, made of black horsehair, fashioned as a caterpillar.

Interior lining composed of a leather band, missing the fabric part. Paper label printed "aux deux mérinos L. ACHARD à Blois." At the back of this label, written by Maître André Thélot's hand, "dragon helmet of Orleans collection of princes 1814-1815 Louis XVIII era."

Very good state of preservation, seal skin having lost some of its fur, Moroccan leather lining of the visor and neck guard worn.

France.

Restoration period 1817-1823.
