Nicolas Hoffmann, Guard of the King's Door in full dress uniform, 1785. Dedicated to Monsieur le Vicomte de Vergennes, Infantry Master of the Camp, Captain Colonel of the Company of His Majesty's Guards at the Palace Gate. These are the oldest Guards of the King's Household, appointed by order of St Louis in 1285.
