Louis Éthis de Corny
Louis-Dominique Éthis de Corny, born in Metz on November 10, 1736, and died in Paris on November 27, 1790, was a French officer and administrator.

Biography
He was the son of a prosecutor at the Parliament of Metz, whose family originated from Forez. He was initially a lawyer and then secretary to the intendant of Franche-Comté. He corresponded with Voltaire.
He became a commissary of war and a lieutenant colonel of cavalry. While serving as a war commissary during the American War of Independence for Rochambeau's army, he accompanied Lafayette and formed friendships with Jefferson, who he regularly hosted in Paris during Jefferson's ambassadorship. In 1783, he was tasked with the commissariat of the Swiss Guards.

His second marriage (contract dated September 24, 1782) to Marguerite Victoire de Palerne, widow of André Denis Foacier de Bagneux, the receiver-general of duties in Rouen, brought him closer to the financial circles and promoted his career.

In 1785, he left the military career and purchased an office as prosecutor of the king in the city of Paris; he demonstrated warm support for the Revolution from 1789. On July 14, 1789, he took part in the storming of the Bastille by attempting mediation with the governor Launay but was overwhelmed by the attackers; Jefferson, his guest, recounted the events in his autobiography.

He took in and trained his nephew, the son of his sister, Claude-François-Étienne Dupin, in the administration. Dupin later married Danton's widow, became a prefect under the Empire, and was created a baron by Louis XVIII.

Louis Éthis de Corny was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati and a Knight of Saint-Louis. He is the ancestor to the 5th generation of Prince Gabriel de Broglie's mother.

He wrote:
• The Dangers of Giving Too Much Consideration to Frivolous Talents, 1768.
• Essay on the Illustrious Men of Plutarch, 1772.
