France.
Former Monarchy.
NOTE: Since the end of the Old Monarchy, the epaulette, which is not provided for the uniforms of marshal-de-camp and lieutenant-general, appears in a fanciful manner on uniforms of ordinary dress to distinguish ranks ( identified by embroidery on full dress uniforms). This type of epaulettes is particularly rare. It is regulated by the order of October 1, 1786: “General officers who will be commanders of regiments or attached to particular corps may wear the uniform; the epaulet of those who will become Lieutenant Generals; will be garnished with three stars in silver blade, if it is in silver trefoil; & that of the Marshals-de-camp, will have two stars in gold or silver blade in opposition to the depth of the epaulette.
