KING'S BODYGUARD SWORD, MODEL 1816, RESTORATION PERIOD.
Gilt brass guard, with four branches forming a shell decorated with the arms of France under a royal crown and against a background of flag bundles and oak and laurel branches. Cap with a long tail. Originally covered in shagreen, now missing, the wooden handle features a double twisted silver wire filigree. The tang is stamped "VERSAILLES."
The hollow-ground blade is engraved with a trophy of arms, two fleurs-de-lis, and the inscription "KING'S BODYGUARD" on one side, and on the other side with a trophy of arms of France and a radiant sun with a face. The spine is engraved with "Manufacture Royale de Klingenthal August 1814." Length: 91.6 cm.
Steel scabbard with two steel suspension rings and a throat molded with foliage in brass. Missing the screw of the throat.
In good condition, this sword comes from a family estate in its original state, never cleaned. The gilt on the brass parts is only present in the crevices. The blade is stained but can be cleaned. The scabbard is in good condition with surface oxidation that can be easily corrected.
