BRIGADE GENERAL'S SWORD, model 1872, THIRD REPUBLIC
Gilded bronze hilt, with a relief-molded hilt showing a crown of oak and laurel leaves against a background of crossed flags, adorned with two riveted silver stars. The folding counter-guard is also relief-molded with oak and laurel leaves.
Tortoiseshell grip, lacking the wire wrapping.
Double-edged blade.
Black varnished leather scabbard with two gilt brass fittings.
Well-preserved condition, never cleaned. The scabbard is in good condition but broken in two at the center and just above the drag.

PROVENANCE:
This sword belonged to Colonel Paul de Clauzade de Mazieux, commanding the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment: born in Toulouse on August 12, 1841, died on November 1, 1902.
Sous-Lieutenant in the 6th Cuirassier Regiment in 1859 (promoted to lieutenant in 1861 and captain in 1868).
Instructor Captain at the Cavalry School in 1872, then with the 9th Cuirassiers (1873), the 17th Dragoons (1873), and back to the Cavalry School (1874).
Major of the 2nd Cuirassier in 1882.
Squadron Leader in 1886 with the 17th Dragoons.
Lieutenant Colonel in the 11th Hussars (1890), 10th Cuirassiers (1890), and 29th Dragoons (1891).
Colonel of the 2nd Cuirassiers in 1894.
Staff Officer of the 1st Army Corps in the Algerian division of Méséa in 1899.
Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1885.
Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1896 (Colonel of the 2nd Cuirassier Regiment).
Commander of the Imperial Order of Saint Anne of Russia.
