POLICE CAP of small dress of Guards of the Household of the King, model 1820, Restoration Period (1820-1830).

Made of "royal blue" wool (dark blue) without piping. Flame decorated with silver thread loops on all four seams. The elliptical-shaped turban on each side measures 19.2 cm in the front, 17.5 cm in the back, and 12.5 cm in the middle, bordered on its convex edge by a silver braid woven in the design of the King's Guards (width 3.9 cm). On the back of the turban, the braid descends on each side of the seam, forming a double braid. At the front, beneath the curved angle formed by the band's cutout, an insignia sewn on royal blue wool, embroidered with silver bullion and sequins, depicts a radiant sun with 12 sequins and 12 bullions, the face stamped in a "solid silver" frame according to regulations, with the embroidery diameter at 3.4 cm and the wool background diameter at 4.4 cm.

Inner headgear entirely lined with worn black waxed basane. Total height of deployed flame is 60 cm. Lacks the silver passementerie pompom.

France. Restoration Period. Very good condition.

NOTE:
As far as our current knowledge extends, only five examples of this cap model are known to exist, including this one, two caps from the Luxembourg company (one of which we offer), and three examples belonging to the collections of the Army Museum in Paris: one of the 1814 model (reference Gb3091), one of the 1820 model (reference Gb311), and one of a senior officer (reference Gb310).

The distinction between the first cap model described in the 1814 regulations and that of 1820 is extremely slight. Here are the two contemporary texts:

1814 Regulations:
"Police cap in blue wool, without piping, model of the old French cavalry; the turban embroidered with a 40mm-wide silver braid, with or without scalloping depending on the rank (no scalloping for the guards, single scalloping for brigadiers, double scalloping for junior officers, triple scalloping for senior officers), measuring 180mm in front with a slight notch; tail 560mm long, folding back into the turban, where a silver sun, 50mm in diameter, was embroidered on the front; 60mm high silver tassel at the end of the flame; silver thread cord on the four seams; headliner in canvas beginning November 11, 1815."

August 16, 1820 Regulations:
"The police cap, in royal blue wool, without piping, embroidered with a silver braid in the design of the unit, 41mm wide, with or without scalloping depending on the rank; on the front of the turban is a 40mm diameter sun, the head in solid silver and the rays embroidered in silver, 12 sequins and 12 bullions; at the end of the flame, decorated with silver loops on the seams, a tassel, also round, 60mm high, adorned with simple fringes or twists, depending on the rank, attached to the flame by a 40mm long cord. The turban measures 185mm in front, 175mm at the back, and 125mm on the sides; a notch is made on the front, the tips of which are 40mm apart. The flame, which folds back into the turban, is 596mm long, measuring the height of the cap."
