Garde Nationale Officer’s gorget. French Revolution (1789-1792).
Brass plate, silvered copper device representing a shield bearing three lis top by the royal crown. Opposite there is a second shield bearing a lictor’s fasces and surrounded with the phrase ‘NOTRE UNION FAIT NOTRE FORCE’ (united we stand, divided we fall) topped by a civic crown. The two shields are separated by a sword topped by a Phrygian cap. Above the latter, a scroll bears the motto ‘LA NATION LA LOI LE ROI’. This emblem is surrounded with a trophy of cannons, drums and flags.
Good condition (gilt has gone off plate, nice device that has kept its silver plating with three bits of tips of flags missing).
