Photo paraphée par l'Empereur en grand uniforme de General-oberst du 1. Leibhusaren Regiment n°1, prise au château de Doorn en 1940 lors de sa captivité par le photographe Franz Grainer de Münich.

Le chancelier Max von Baden ayant annoncé l'abdication du Kaiser, la république fut proclamée et il se résigna, abdiqua officiellement le 9 novembre 1918 (le traité d'abdication ne fut signé cependant que le 28) et se réfugia à Doorn aux Pays-Bas (protégé par la reine Wilhelmine, il ne sera pas livré aux vainqueurs pour être jugé comme responsable de la guerre conformément aux souhaits des alliés).
Son exil fut endeuillé par le suicide de son fils Joachim, qui entraîna la fin de l’impératrice. Il se remaria l'année suivante et écrivit ses mémoires.
Il mourut à 82 ans aux Pays-Bas, le 4 juin 1941 et reçut à ses funérailles les honneurs militaires allemands.
